Publication Formats

Now there are two different ways to publish a doctoral dissertation at the University of Helsinki. In addition to a printed dissertation, one can also publish an electronic version on the Internet. For the doctoral candidate, an electronic dissertation makes it possible to reach as large an audience as possible. What is more, publishing electronically reduces the required number of printed copies, thus lowering the costs. For the University, electronic publishing means improved research visibility and better circulation. It also helps the University build a virtual publication archive. Most doctoral dissertations are currently published electronically.

However, even if one chooses to publish an electronic version, 30 printed copies of the dissertation are still required. These are distributed to the University and the faculty. The doctoral candidate will usually also need additional copies for friends and colleagues.

If a candidate decides to publish his or her dissertation only in printed form, 30 copies must be given to the Helsinki University Library. Additionally, copies are needed for both the faculty and for personal use.
