Frequently Asked Questions
Question: My public examination will take place several months from now, but I would like to provide a few books to my opponent much sooner. Is this possible?
Answer: Digital printing makes it possible to print just a few copies. These can be bound, or, alternatively, dissertation folders may be manufactured in advance. Of course, for advance printing to be possible, the manuscript must already be complete and require no changes.
Question: Will Cyrillic letters be printed correctly?
Answer: You should always include all fonts you have used in your dissertation with your print-ready file. However, it may often be easiest to supply us with camera-ready pages, especially if you have used non-standard desktop publishing programs that are rarely used in Finland. If you still wish to supply your material as files, you should get in touch with the Helsinki University Press early on and ask about program compatibility and the printing of special characters.
Question: I was unable to have all my materials ready by print time, and the public examination is approaching quickly. Is it possible to shorten the public display time of 10 days?
Answer: With special permission, the faculty may shorten the public display time to five days. However, you must apply for this early on.
Question: While surfing the Internet, I found an image that would be ideal for my dissertation. Is it acceptable to use the image, and can it be printed?
Answer: Copyright regulations apply to material on the Internet as well. That is, you must receive permission from the copyright holder prior to using any material. Technically, using images found on the Internet is usually impossible, since they tend to be highly compressed, low-resolution files that would result in inferior print quality.
Question: If I publish my dissertation electronically on the E-thesis site, will I receive a unique web address that I may distribute to friends and colleagues?
Answer: Yes. The address will look something like this: http://ethesis.helsinki.fi/julkaisut/faculty/subject/vs/author.
